The Agriculture Department and Food and Drug Administration recently proposed a joint regulation for the oversight of cell-cultured meats. Scott Bennett, director of congressional relations at AFBF, explained the next steps in the process in a recent Newsline.
“FDA is going to oversee the beginning stages of the production of these cell-based proteins…cell collection, cell banks, cell growth and differentiation, and then the baton is going to be passed over to USDA where they’ll oversee the production and then the labeling of the final product,” Bennett said.
Farm Bureau is monitoring the situation closely. USDA and FDA are accepting comments on the proposal through Dec. 26.
