Specialty crop grant applications sought for 2018

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) is seeking grant proposals for projects designed to increase production and availability of fruits and vegetables, and other specialty crops in Utah. Grant proposals for a portion of the $275,000 available are due by March 23, 2018.

The federally funded Specialty Crop Block Grant program is designed to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crop producers in areas such as marketing, promotion, education, research, trade, and increasing child and adult nutrition knowledge and consumption of specialty crops. Specialty Crops are defined as fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, horticulture and nursery crops (including floriculture). A complete list of specialty crops is posted on the USDA website, https://www.ams.usda.gov/services/grants/scbgp/specialty-crop.

Individual producers, producer groups, organizations, and associations, as well as state and local organizations, academia and other specialty crops stakeholders are eligible to apply. Each project must demonstrate measurable benefits for the specialty crop industry and must assist more than just a single producer, organization or company.
