Like most of America’s farmers and ranchers, agriculture is much more than a profession for AFBF President Zippy Duvall. Farmers and ranchers are united in the fact that, like Duvall, agriculture for them is a passion and a life calling. Using a theme of “Uniting for Agriculture,” Duvall travelled to meet Farm Bureau members in 33 states in 2016, to hear about their issues and their stories. As he explains in a newly released AFBF video shot on his Georgia farm, “Beyond the Fencerows,” a passion for engagement is also required.
“I think about all the things we do as farmers to take care of this land and our animals and it motivates me to get out and tell the story,” Duvall said.
By the end of this year, Duvall hopes to hear stories from Farm Bureau members in each of the states he has not yet visited as president of AFBF. But, this year, he will be sharing a message about the importance of engaging. That’s consistent with the encouragement his father passed on to him, to get involved in Farm Bureau, to get “outside his fencerows” and become involved in policy making.
“We are looking for opportunities and the landscape to take our organization and tell the farmer’s story to make a difference in that policy that’s going to shape their life back on the farm,” Duvall said.
