Too often in agriculture, we do not acknowledge or even take our eyes for granted. Eye injuries are a significant concern due to the nature of our work, which involves exposure to various hazards. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), agricultural workers experience thousands of eye injuries each year. These injuries are caused by:
• Chemical exposure (fertilizers, pesticides, and disinfectants).
• Debris and dust (from grain, soil, and hay).
• Tree branches or equipment (such as machinery and tools).
• Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from prolonged sun exposure.
A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that eye injuries account for about 9% of all occupational injuries in the agricultural industry. These injuries can be prevented with proper eye protection and safety practices, such as wearing goggles or face shields. Without proper eye protection, these injuries can lead to partial or total vision loss.
