Justen Smith, executive director of the Utah State University Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources Department, received the National Association of Agricultural Agents (NACAA) Service to American/World Agriculture Award at the association’s recent meetings in Billings, Montana.

The award recognizes a U.S. Citizen who has made a major contribution to agriculture in the United States or globally, who has inspired NACAA members, and is recognized by their peers and the public.

Smith has worked for USU Extension for 26 years and has secured over $11 million in grants and external funding, directly supporting Extension initiatives and agricultural development. He led the effort to secure $1.2 million in funding for the construction of the USU Extension building in Davis County, providing a dedicated space for agricultural education and outreach.

Smith has worked in 24 countries across Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and beyond, providing technical assistance to farmers and agricultural organizations. His work with USDA, USAID, and multiple international organizations has helped improve livestock production, enhance food security, and develop sustainable agricultural practices in diverse regions.

Smith helped establish Iraq’s first feed analysis laboratories, provided technical training for newly formed 4-H sheep clubs, and assisted in the development of commercial cattle and sheep feedlots throughout the country. In South Sudan and Uganda, he played a key role in drafting a 25-year master plan for agricultural infrastructure, a project that will guide the nation’s agricultural growth for decades to come.

“Justen has worked with local farmers, government agencies, and international organizations to ensure that farmers and agricultural professionals have access to the latest research, training, and resources,” said Ken White, senior vice president of USU Extension and Statewide Campuses. “His efforts and leadership have led to tangible improvements in food production and sustainability, benefiting communities throughout Utah and the world. It is a pleasure to work with him and witness his genuine passion and dedication to making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”
