The 2019 Story and Video Contest Winners have been selected! The contests are run by the Utah Farm Bureau Women's Leadership Committee, as a way to bring a connection of Utah's agriculture from the farm to the plate. As a previous 3rd Grade story winner wrote and illustrated, "How to make a Whopper and Whopper Jr." Detailing how her family's beef cattle reach the consumer.
The theme this year is "Thinking Outside the Barn: Preserving the Past, Protecting the Present, Forging the Future".
Submissions were a true to life exploration of the ideas expressed in the theme, with characters and objects based in factual material. One of the winning submissions, Eva Christensen wrote, "Lately we have also tried to produce geothermal power, to use the hot water and also create green power." Another student, Paisley Hallows wrote of spending time with her grandpa on the farm and how their methods and equipment has changed in the past several years. "Tractors and other farm implements can insert seeds directly into furrows to avoid waste and cost using a GPS. Because of this, farmers no longer just toss seeds randomly over the top of a plowed field. Fertilizer can be applied to areas of the farm needing it after soil samples, rather than everywhere, avoiding waste again. . . Wow grandpa, you changed my whole perspective, you didn't just think outside the barn, you thought outside of farming the old way!" She wrote.
Story Contest 1st place winners receive $100 and a pizza party sponsored by Western AgCredit. Their teacher also receives agriculture education materials. 2nd place winners receive $50, and 3rd place receives $25.
