The Utah Farm Bureau will kick off another market year this weekend, with the opening of the Murray Park Farmers Market. The Utah Farm Bureau started the Murray Park Farmers Market began in 1981 and currently hosts 27 farmers selling a wide variety of products, including peaches, plums, corn and tomatoes.
The Murray Park Farmers Market is the longest continuously running farmers market in the state, and is proud to be a producer-only market. Many of the farmers who attend the market have been doing so since its inception in the 1980s. The South Jordan Farmers Market will start Aug. 4, next to City Hall in South Jordan.
POWER OF PRODUCE
New this year, the Murray Park Farmers Market is proud to announce the launch of our new children’s programming this season, thanks to funding from Utah’s Own and Zions Bank. The program, called POP Club (or “power of produce”) was developed by national nonprofit Farmers Market Coalition (FMC) to engage youth with their local food. Every Saturday from July 26th – October 26th, children of all ages are invited to participate in a fun activity and receive $2 POP Bucks to spend on fruits and vegetables at the market. The funding for the program enables 50 children per market day to receive POP Bucks. Participation is free.
“We think it’s incredibly important to teach the next generation of Utahns the importance of our local farmers markets, as well as an appreciation of seasonal fruits and vegetables, said Adelaide Corey-Disch, Farmers Market Manager for the Utah Farm Bureau. We look forward to giving our youngest marketgoers a greater understanding of where their food comes from. It’s also just really fun as a kid to be an active participant in your food choices and have your own buying power.”
Activities will range from identifying different produce to tasting berries from our market farmers to making agricultural-related crafts. Murray Park Farmers Market is seeking community sponsors interested in helping run the activity table each week.
Sponsors can sign-up for available market days by emailing Adelaide.coreydisch@fbfs.com.
NATIONAL FARMERS MARKET WEEK
This year Murray and South Jordan Farmers Market will join with the Farmers Market Coalition as well as Utah Farmers Market Network in celebrating National Farmers Market week, August 4-11, 2024. On Saturday, August 10th, kids will have the chance to participate in a Farmers Market Bingo and crafts at both markets. For the Murray Park market, the Murray City Library will also be on hand with their “book bike” for those interested in signing up for a library card or borrowing books.
The Murray market runs in Murray Park every Friday & Saturday from July 26th -October 26th. The South Jordan market runs from Aug. 3-October 12. Market hours are 8 am to 1 pm. SNAP/EBT is accepted, as well as Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers at both markets. Murray Park Farmers Market is also a proud partner of Wasteless Solutions, which helped our vendors divert 2,400 pounds of food from landfills last year. For a list of vendors or to find out more about the market, please go to the Murray market website, murrayfarmersmarketut.com.
The South Jordan Farmers Market was originally held in Sandy, but has now been in South Jordan since 2006. This market boasts 24 farmers and is also a producer-only market. The South Jordan Farmers Market continues to partner with the Department of Health and Human Services to administer the USDA-funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP) and Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB). We are excited to be distributing an increased match- for every $1 of SNAP, participants will receive $2 in DUFB, up to $60/market day.
